The Most Popular Topics For Music Research

The Most Popular Topics For Music ResearchOne of the first questions I ask a music student who is about to start college is, 'What kind of music do you like?' It's not that this question is difficult, or that it's unreasonable. In fact, it's just the kind of question that any aspiring musician should be able to answer. But as the question dawns on the music student, it's also the kind of question that has been asked hundreds of times before and is probably out of their reach. Because I've had students ask me this same question, I've always asked them if they had a particular kind of music that they liked. Unfortunately, many students weren't prepared to answer this question. After all, many of these students have simply discovered music without any training. At least this is what I've found. A good way to answer this question would be to select some songs that best represent the music of their future music professor. Ideally, these songs should be popular songs with similar lyrics that can be identified as the kind of music they love.Without having an adequate knowledge base for music, however, this is probably the last thing they'll think about. And, unfortunately, most students who have not taken up music as a subject before will not be equipped to answer the question correctly. I would recommend that a music student research his or her favorite music genre in advance so that he or she has at least a general idea of what kind of music will make him or her happy. Then, just as I would encourage a piano student to develop a good foundation in rhythm, harmony, and melody, I would do the same for a music student. Ask them what makes them happy in different genres. Hopefully, they'll find music with the same characteristics as their own. After all, I can assure you that as a piano student, I'm always searching for ways to improve my music reading.Music is, after all, one of the few subjects that I enjoy studying from a serious classical music perspective. While I enj oy modern classical music from time to time, I've been more interested in the roots of classical music than any other genre. This is no accident. This is the type of music I prefer to study. So, how do you find good topics to research? By looking through a good music library. It's a good idea to get one that's devoted to its subject matter. Otherwise, as a student, you'll have to spend hours scouring your library for CDs that may have been produced before you're even born.
